Freddie Poor has spent 40 years in law enforcement in Galveston County with 25 years in upper and executive management.  He has honorably served both as a Chief of Police for the Galveston Police Department and Chief Deputy for the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office. 

Chief Poor has worked closely with all the County’s law enforcement agencies to promote “Law and Order” for its citizens.  His broad range of management experience has uniquely and properly qualified him for the Office of Sheriff. 

As Chief Deputy he supervises the Sheriff’s command staff with the oversight of 403 fulltime and 50 part-time employees with an annual budget of $20.2 million. 

As Chief of Police, he managed a 204 member agency with a $6.8 million budget and retired in 1993 after successfully completing a 5 year business plan. 

He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Course for Police Chiefs.  The Chief’s community involvement includes past and present service as a board member for the Child Advocacy Center; Department of Family (Children’s) Protective and Regulatory Services; Galveston Teen Health Center; Rotary Club of Galveston Island; United Way of Galveston; Communities in Schools; Galveston Mayor’s Gang Task Force and Galveston County Emergency Services District No. 1.  He has received numerous awards and recognitions including   “Officer of the Year” and” Deputy of the Year” from the Fifty Club of Galveston County.
